ServSafe® Practice Test — Free, Full-Length, Honestly Scored

Ninety questions. Eighty of them scored. A two-hour clock, and a pass mark of 70% — 56 out of 80. That is the real shape of the ServSafe Manager exam, and you can run it here right now with a free account and no card.

Almost everyone typing "servsafe practice test" is studying for the Manager exam. So that is what this run is. If you were told to get a food handler card instead, skip down — it is a different, shorter, cheaper test and you are in the wrong place by about an hour.

What the free run actually gives you

A real one. Not ten sample questions and a paywall.

    • 90 questions, 80 scored. Ten items in your run are unmarked pilot questions, picked at random. You will not know which ten while you are answering — you find out on the results screen. That is exactly how the real exam works.
    • A two-hour countdown that a refresh will not reset. Close the tab, come back, the clock kept going. ServSafe publishes two hours as the limit for proctored print sessions and says the average candidate finishes in about an hour and a half.
    • Scored at 70%, because 70% is the number. 56 of 80 scored questions correct.
    • A per-chapter breakdown, mapped to the ten chapters of the official Manager book, so you know whether your problem is cooling times or pest management.
    • Blank counts as wrong, same as the real thing. ServSafe's own guidance: never leave a question blank, there is no penalty for guessing.

All of that comes with a free account — an email address or a Google sign-in, no payment, no card. Reading why every answer is right — with the FDA Food Code section printed under it — is free as well, on the same screen. What money buys is more practice, not the right to understand your mistakes: a second full run on a different form, the ten chapter drill sets, the edition-change questions, the printable temperature card. The 90-presented, 80-scored shape is the part most practice tests quietly drop 90-question format.

The pass mark is 70%, not 75%

This is the thing we most want you to take away, because getting it wrong changes how you study. ServSafe's own live FAQ (servsafe.com) says it plainly: a passing score is 70% or higher, obtained by answering at least 56 out of 80 questions correctly. There are 90 questions; ten are pilot items for research only. Most free practice tests tell you 75%. They are quoting a ©2020 Examinee Handbook that is still sitting on ServSafe's site and still says "75 percent or better" — and still tells you to answer all 90 questions as though all 90 counted. ServSafe never took the old PDF down. Half the internet copied it.

Check the arithmetic. 56 of 80 is exactly 70.0%. 75% of 90 is 67.5 questions — not a whole number, and not an exam with 80 scored items. The live page is right. The PDF is stale. We score at 70% and we show our working — both ServSafe pages, the stale PDF, the arithmetic, and what changes if you study to the wrong number show our working on 70% vs 75%. We also flag it: this is a live conflict between two of the administrator's own surfaces. We re-check it before every release, and if ServSafe changes the answer we change the band the same day.

A practice question from our bank — written by us, not an exam question

A cook lines up trays of raw ground beef, raw fish, and raw chicken touching each other on one prep table. What does the Food Code require?

Which ServSafe exam are you actually taking?

Two different tests get called "the ServSafe test" and people book the wrong one.

ServSafe Manager — the Food Protection Manager Certification Examination. 90 questions, proctored, 70% to pass, valid five years — check your state or local laws and your employer's requirements. The exam is $38.99 with an access code, $99 online-proctored, or $108.99 at a test center; the course is $125 on top. This is the one your county inspector means when they ask who the certified food protection manager on shift is.

ServSafe Food Handler — 40 questions, not proctored, 75% to pass, valid three years, $15. ServSafe calls the result a Certificate of Achievement, not a certification. If your manager handed you a $15 link, that is this one Food Handler practice test. The tell is the price and the proctor. If someone is watching you take it and it cost more than $15, it is almost certainly the Manager exam.

And before you buy anything: your state or county decides what it accepts, not ServSafe. ServSafe is one of thirteen manager programs accredited by ANAB under the Conference for Food Protection standard, and most state rules name "an accredited program" rather than a brand. Some places — New York City, for one — run their own certificate entirely what your state and county actually require.

What is on it, and what nobody can tell you

The exam is built on the FDA Food Code — the 2022 tenth edition, as amended by the Supplement of 4 November 2024. That Supplement changed definitions and added disinfection provisions. It changed no temperature, no time, no cooling rule, no date-marking rule, no handwashing number and no reportable-illness list. The numbers you memorize are stable.

What it asks of you comes in three shapes. Recall a standard — a temperature, a time, a concentration. Judge a situation: a cook says she has been vomiting since last night, what does the manager do. And recognize a number that changed between Food Code editions, which is where stale study material quietly kills scores.

Candidates who post about this exam talk about one thing more than anything else, and it is temperatures. Cooking temps, cooling times, hot-hold, three-compartment sink, hand sink. Learn those first the temperatures you have to know cold.

Here is what no honest site can give you: a weighting. ServSafe publishes no exam blueprint — no domain list, no percentage split, no per-topic count. The accreditation standard it is certified against says examination specifications derived from the blueprint shall be publicly available. ServSafe cites a 2025 content blueprint and publishes none of it. So when a study site tells you two topics are "more than half the exam," that number came from nowhere. We build to the official book's ten chapters, we label them as chapters, and we will never print a percentage next to one.

Do the run cold, then decide

Take the free run before you study. A bad first score against a real 90-question clock tells you more than a week of re-reading the book. Then go to the Manager page, where the format, the pilot mechanic and the paid tiers are laid out in full ServSafe Manager practice test.

→ See what's in Two Runs ($19) and Full Prep ($34). One-time payments, not subscriptions. 30 days to ask for your money back, no conditions. For scale: the real exam is $38.99 to $108.99, and failing it means buying the attempt again plus a 30-to-60-day wait what the real exam costs.

    FAQ

What do you get for free?

One full 90-question timed run on a two-hour clock, and your result the moment you submit it: raw score out of 80, percentage, pass band at 56, per-chapter breakdown, and which ten questions were unscored pilot items. That needs a free account — email or Google — and no card. The question-by-question review — every answer with its Food Code section — is also free, on the same account. What costs money is a second run, the ten chapter drill sets, the edition-change questions, the temperature card.

How many questions are on the ServSafe Manager exam?

Ninety. But only 80 are scored — the other 10 are unscored pilot questions being trialed for future exams, and they are not pointed out to you. So you answer all 90 and you're graded on 80. All questions are multiple choice; candidates consistently report four options each.

What is a passing score on the ServSafe Manager exam?

70% — at least 56 of the 80 scored questions correct. That is the administrator's own published figure, and 56 out of 80 is exactly 70%. Our runs are scored the way the real exam is scored — 90 presented, 80 counted, pass at 56 — so the number you finish with here means the same thing as the number you finish with there: raw score out of 80, percentage, and PASS or NOT YET against the 70% band.

How long do you get for the ServSafe Manager exam?

Two hours. That limit is published for the print, in-person proctored session — the online-proctored FAQ doesn't state a duration at all. Stated average completion time is about an hour and a half. Our timed runs use a two-hour clock and label it as the published print-session limit.

How long is a ServSafe Manager certification good for?

Five years. ServSafe's own pages add a caveat, and so do we: check your state or local laws and your employer's standards, because recertification requirements vary. Certificates more than five years old cannot be reissued.

Can you retake the ServSafe Manager exam if you fail?

Yes, with limits. You may take it twice within a 30-day period. A third or later attempt requires waiting at least 60 days from your last one. No more than four attempts are allowed in a 12-month period. Not passing is the only legitimate reason to retake it. Retaking online means buying another online-proctored exam and rescheduling through ProctorU. No retake discount is published.

Are these the real ServSafe exam questions?

Every question here is written from the 2022 FDA Food Code — the same source the exam is built on — with the section cited under every answer, so you can go check the rule yourself. That is the stronger position, and it is the honest one: the real items are copyright-protected and confidential, nobody legitimate has them, and a site offering you "real" or "leaked" questions is telling you what it did to get them. Ours are original, 203 of them across 95 cited sections, and every numeric answer is checked against that section's own text before it enters the bank.
