The ServSafe® Passing Score: 70%, or 56 of 80 Questions

The passing score on the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Examination is 70% — at least 56 of the 80 scored questions correct. It is not 75%, which is the figure most prep material publishes, including sites that outrank this one. That is the answer. The rest is the evidence, because this is exactly the number you should not take on anyone's word — ours included.

The number sits inside a 90/80 structure

You are shown 90 questions. Only 80 of them are scored. The other ten are pilot questions being trialed for future forms: they are mixed in, they are not identified to you, and they do not count toward your result. So the line is 56 of the 80 that count — and you still answer all 90, because you cannot tell which ten are which.

Two more facts from the administrator. Blanks are scored as wrong and there is no penalty for guessing, so never leave one empty. And there is no scaled score: every official statement about this exam is a raw percentage or a raw count. A result out of 1,000 belongs to a different exam.

Two live ServSafe pages say 70%

The Manager FAQ puts it in one sentence:

"A passing score is 70% or higher. This is obtained by answering at least 56 out of 80 questions correctly. The exam has 90 questions; however there are 10 pilot questions that are for research purposes only."

    — ServSafe Manager FAQs

A second, separate page — the Online Proctoring FAQ — answers 70% independently, and describes the same structure: there are 90 questions on the exam, but only 80 are scored, because the exam includes ten unscored pilot questions. Two maintained pages, the same answer, in the administrator's own words. We fetched both ourselves on 11 September 2026 rather than take them from a secondary source, and they are re-checked quarterly.

A practice question from our bank — written by us, not an exam question

An inspector runs the handwashing sink by the prep line and the water reaches 88°F. The manager, going by an old training binder, thinks the sink is out of compliance. What is the correct call?

    And a ©2020 PDF still says 75%

This is where the 75% comes from, and it is worth being precise rather than dramatic about it. The ServSafe Food Protection Manager Examinee Handbook, copyright 2020, is still downloadable from the official site. It says "A passing score is 75 percent or better." It also instructs candidates to "Answer all 90 questions," and it does not mention pilot items anywhere. (Examinee Handbook, PDF)

There is even a fingerprint of the revision. The FAQ quoted above renders 70% today — but its own URL still reads ../A-passing-score-is-75-or-higher-This-is-obtained. The answer was updated. The slug it was first published under was left alone.

That is a document-maintenance problem, not a trick. Old PDFs sit on large websites for years, and URLs get frozen because changing them breaks every link pointing in. Nothing here suggests anyone is trying to mislead candidates. What it does mean is that the stale file is the one the rest of the category quoted, and the error has been copying outward ever since.

The arithmetic corroborates the live pages

56 of 80 is exactly 70.0% — a clean fit with the structure both live pages describe. Now try the handbook's own combination. It pairs "75 percent or better" with "answer all 90 questions", and 75% of 90 is 67.5 questions, which nobody can answer. Those two halves do not fit each other. Read 75% against 80 scored questions instead and you get 60 — a whole number, so arithmetic alone does not rule that reading out. But the handbook is not describing an 80-scored exam; it describes a 90-question one, from before pilot items were disclosed. The live pages are internally consistent and current. The PDF is neither. That is why we score at 70%.

What believing 75% actually does to you

Two ways it costs you, one mild and one not.

You prepare against a line that is not the line. Studying to 60 of 80 instead of 56 is not dangerous — four questions of extra margin never hurt anyone. It just means the work you think is required is more than the work required.

You mis-read a borderline practice score, which is worse. Score 57 of 80 on a practice run and you have passed: 71%. Against a 75% band, that same run tells you that you failed. People act on that. They push back a booking that was already sitting on a compliance clock, or they spend the last night cramming the wrong chapter because a screen told them they were three short when they were one clear. It runs the other way too — a practice test that scores you out of all 90 rather than the 80 that count will flatter you — and you want the true band in both directions.

The stakes behind the band are the reason to get it right. The exam is $38.99 with an access code, $99.00 online-proctored, or $108.99 at a test center, and failing means buying the attempt again — no retake discount is published. You may sit it twice within 30 days; a third attempt means waiting at least 60 days, with no more than four in any 12-month period. Most people booking this exam work to a date somebody else set, so the wait costs more than the fee what a retake costs.

So how many can you get wrong?

Twenty-four. You need 56 of the 80 scored questions, so 24 misses still passes. Keep the pilot items in mind while you do that sum. Ten of the 90 in front of you are not scored, so a few of your misses may cost you nothing at all — but you never find out which ten were free, so never count on it. Treat all 90 as if they count.

    Why 75% keeps looking plausible

One more point in fairness: 75% is not a number somebody invented from nothing. ServSafe's Food Handler product — a different, shorter, unproctored assessment, 40 questions, $15, and a Certificate of Achievement rather than a certification — genuinely does pass at 75%. At least one other accredited manager program passes at 75% too, and at least one scores on a scale instead of a percentage. If you have seen 75% on a food safety exam, you may well have seen it correctly, for a different test than the one you are booked to sit which exam you are actually booked to sit.

Stale material gets more than the pass mark wrong, too: the hand sink moved from 100°F to 85°F, eight allergens became nine, hold times changed the values old study material still gets wrong.

    What we do with it

Our simulator scores every run at 70%: raw score out of 80, the percentage, PASS or NOT YET against 56, and a breakdown by chapter. No percentile, no predicted outcome, no pass rate — ours or anybody else's. We also hold this as an open conflict rather than a closed one. It is re-verified before every release and quarterly after, and if the administrator changes its published answer we move our band the same day and say what changed.

→ Take a full 90-question run against the real band. Free with a free account, no card — two hours, scored out of 80 against 56 a full run against the real band. The explanations afterwards, each with its Food Code section, are free too.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a passing score on the ServSafe Manager exam?

70% — at least 56 of the 80 scored questions correct. That is the administrator's own published figure, and 56 out of 80 is exactly 70%. Our runs are scored the way the real exam is scored — 90 presented, 80 counted, pass at 56 — so the number you finish with here means the same thing as the number you finish with there: raw score out of 80, percentage, and PASS or NOT YET against the 70% band.

How many questions can you get wrong and still pass?

Twenty-four. You need 56 of the 80 scored questions, so 24 misses still passes. Remember that 10 of the 90 questions in front of you aren't scored at all — and you have no way to tell which ten, so treat every question as if it counts.

Why do other sites say the passing score is 75%?

Because two official sources disagree. ServSafe's live FAQ pages say a passing score is 70%, obtained by answering at least 56 of 80 correctly. An older Examinee Handbook, copyright 2020 and still downloadable, says 75 percent. We go with the live, maintained pages, and the arithmetic backs them up: 56/80 is exactly 70%, while 75% of 90 questions is 67.5 — not a whole number, and not consistent with an 80-question scored structure. That old PDF is the likeliest source of the 75% you'll see everywhere else. the full working on 70% versus 75%
