The certificate is valid for 5 years — check your state or local laws and your employer's requirements.
What your state or county requires can be a shorter interval than the one printed on the certificate, and that local interval is the one an inspector goes by.
We have not verified ServSafe's own renewal process to the standard we hold every other number on this site to, so we are not going to describe it yet. What we have verified is which certification each state accepts, and for how long.
